Frequently Asked Questions - Birth Doula

What is a birth doula?

A birth doula is a person trained and experienced in childbirth who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after childbirth.

What types of births do you attend?

I attend births in hospitals, birth centers and at home. It is important that you feel comfortable in your birthspace, wherever that might be.

I am planning a medicated or cesarean birth, why should I hire a doula?

As your doula I am here to support and be your advocate in all cases, whether that be through documentation, keeping a calm enviroment or walking you through the stages of labor as they happen. Doulas are an important tool at ANY birth! The use of a doula during childbirth is proven to decrease the use of Pitocin by 31% and the chance od C-section by 28%*.

What if I can't afford a doula?

I am a firm believer in, "A doula for every woman who wants one." and I will do everything in my power make that happen. I am open to payment plans, bartering and reduced prices for families who are on a limited income.

Do you offer placenta encapsulation?

At this time I do not offer placenta encapsulation but I would be happy to refer you to a freind who does.

Does a doula replace the role of my husband or partner?

I am there to help both the expecting mother and father. Often times labor can be a long process and your husband might want to eat, rest or use the restroom. I will offer a continuous presence so in his absence you are still being supported.
